As an old guy, when I traveled I would break out the old trusty road atlas, and sit down read the map for a little while and then plan my route. Eventually getting lost and having to stop on the side of the road in some God-forsaken swamp to figure out where I was, how I got there, and how the heck I was going to get to my destination.
Knowing not to bother asking Otis Driftwood or any other member of the Firefly clan, I would usually travel on down the road until I came to a landmark that should be on the map. Sometimes this would turn into more adventure than I cared for, like the time I was abducted by aliens, but thats another story.
Now days they have these here newfangled devices that you punch in an address and it gives you directions on how to get there, in fact some of these things even talk to you, so you can drive along and not have to take your eyes off the road.
I recently tried out a couple of the Garmin Nuvi ones and I have to admit I was very impressed.
So I figured I would list some of them here so you could take a look at them and read up on em some. I also listed one of the DVS Plenio ones that I was impressed with.

Growing a garden is one thing you can do that pays off in more ways than one. You get the benefit of getting out and doing something that involves a little exercise, the enjoyment of seeing crops grow and the extra healthy benefit of eating home-grown organic foods. Food that is fresh and has no extra additives, you know like MSG or RiboFlavin (Does anyone really know what Riboflavin is? Seriously, it’s in everything.) There are a few drawbacks to raising your own crops, for instance when to plant, what to plant, and where to get the seeds to plant it. Well here’s the answers When To Plant When the ground starts warming up and you have had your last frost, is the time to plant. Or as Grampappy used to say “When you hear the whippoorwill in the evening, it’s time to plant.”
What To Plant Grampappy used to say “If you like corn plant corn, if you don’t like corn then don’t plant it. I like corn, and sweet potaters as well as Irish potaters, and turnip greens, so I’m planting greens and taters and corn”.
Where To Get The Seeds To PLant Grampappy always said, “They’s this place up North there somewhere’s called Gurney’s Seed and Nursery that mail order seeds come from, I get’em cheaper than I would if’n I drove into town to get them and they show up at my mailbox. All that time that I would spend hitching up the mule and riding into town and all over it hunting my seeds could be better spent plowing the garden, or chopping stove wood, or feeding the chickens, or shoeing the horses, or building a fence or well you get the point.”
“But Grampappy, town is only a mile and a half away and it only takes fifteen minutes to walk completely through it, and there aint but three shops in town. In fact your corn field borders on the property the general store sits on.” I said.
“Shut up boy, I aint sacrificing the quality I get from Gurney’s Seed and Nursery for some highfalootin trip into that big city over yonder.”
Grampappy planted his garden with Gurney’s seeds up until he couldn’t farm anymore.
The last time I got to see Grampappy alive, he had a Gurney’s mail order catalog and was picking out seeds that he was planning on planting.
There was only a few things that Grampappy truly loved in this world, one was a corncob pipe, another was his old mule named Joe, (he often told me ‘Boy I know that mule a lot better than I know you’. and I guess he was right since the mule was pushing thirty and I was only 13), and another was his Gurney’s seed catalog. Ironically enough Grampappy died one day and the old mule died the next, I reckon he had to wait for Grampappy to pick out the spot to plant.
Funny thing is, those seeds he had ordered arrived right on time.
Every year when I plant my garden I think about my Grandfather and how during the last few days of Winter you would see him and Joe the mule, walking around in his fields with that catalog, studying how he was going to rotate his crops that year. He would point out a spot and Joe would nod his head as if he knew exactly what Grampappy was talking about, they would look at the land a little while and then at the catalog. I’ve been using Gurney’s Seeds for all my gardening needs since then.
Have you ever bought something from the store and get it home only to find out that batteries are not included? It’s one of the curses of old age, when you can’t see that tiny little statement on the box of the new all in one remote control you just bought. So you go stumbling around the house looking for batteries only to find out that you don’t have any at all to fit that freaking remote. That’s where Batteries.com comes in, they have batteries priced so low that you can actually afford to stock up on them. Of course if you need them right at that moment you have to put your shoes back on, and drive to the nearest “Gotcha Now Store” and pay an outrages price for two batteries that are only going to last a week. Of course that week is all the time you need if you take advantage of the Batteries.com Clearance Center, then you will be able to find your batteries and get them delivered to your front door, or back door if your house is built that way.
I recently had a problem with my old cell phone battery dying on me every time I was trying to make an important call, funny it never died when telemarketers were trying to get in touch with me. Of course deleting all those stupid text messages and voice mails takes its toll on your battery. So what’s the solution? By a new battery and a backup to go with it. What I do now is use one of my old phones as a charger, and charge all three batteries and then when one goes out, I replace it with the others, this solution is not necessary if you are in your car where a car charger is available, but when you are in the field away from your vehicle, having a spare battery in your pocket really comes in handy.
Have you wondered how they made all the scenery on Pandora, not to mention the long-tailed giant blue folks (Na’vi) or the cool looking critters?
Did you notice how most critters had an extra set of legs up front? I guess they took forelegs and turned them into four legs.
A lot of the effects were made with a product line you can download and buy.
Adobe Products.
This is a quote from the producer of Avatar, John Landau; “Certain software enables you to do your job. Other software allows you to do your job better. Adobe has come up with a suite of software that allows us to do our jobs better.”
Mr. Landau went on to explain more about each of the Adobe products that were used in the making of Avatar.
These are all quotes from him; “Photo shop was the first piece of software, it was used for the textures that appeared on the creatures and characters as well as for map paintings that appeared throughout the movie.” It was a very critical part in their creation of a whole virtual world.
“InDesign was used to create easy to read forms and to manage the whole production.”
“LightRoom was used to catalog thousands of images.”
“After Effects was used to quickly evaluate live action with CG elements, so that they could see how the interaction of the live actors as they worked with their cg counterparts. It was used from beginning to end.”
“Premier Pro was used by the Internal Visual Effects Department to create sequences of shots.”
“Acrobat Connect was used to allow artists back at their lab to connect with the set.” Allowing them to work and collaborate in realtime.
Granted this was a team of experts that worked for four years to make a major motion picture, but you get the idea.
If Adobe products are good enough that you can make a movie like this, just imagine how much it would help you in your day-to-day image, and video editing and creation.
Not only do the help you with images and videos but also with web design and they on top of that they also have a learning center to help you get started.
